Welcome to the 'Pearl of Africa'

Welcome to Uganda, the ‘Pearl of Africa’! On arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will find your Savannah Wings representative waiting to greet you. They will then drive you to your accommodation for the night a short distance away. Here you’ll be able to freshen up, relax and sleep before you begin your safari tomorrow.

Day 1 - Nocturnal Game Driving

After breakfast you’ll be driven 20km north to Kajjansi airstrip, to board your private aircraft and fly over the shores of Lake Victoria and banana plantations to Mbarara town airstrip, a 1hr 30min flight. It’s then a short drive to your first safari destination, Lake Mburo NP. Your exclusive lodge is perched on a rocky kopje, with spectacular views out over a vast savannah landscape. Unwind at the infinity pool, overlooking the valley below where buffalo, eland, impala, warthogs, bushbuck, giraffe and zebra visit the waterhole. Once the sunsets drive into the darkness on a nocturnal game drive, giving you one of the best chances to find a leopard in Uganda! You’ll also be on the look out for hyena, buffalo and hippopotamus out of the water searching for food before your return to you lodge for the night.

Day 2 - Savannah Horseback Safari

Explore the savannah plains with a horseback safari. By leaving the vehicle behind you’ll be able to experience the peace and tranquility offered by the park. As you trot, canter and gallop you’ll get the chance to be up close with wildlife such as the warthog, topi, impala, duiker, bushbuck, waterbuck and zebra. In the afternoon take to the skies again and fly to the mountain rainforest of the gorilla highlands. You’ll then transfer to your lodge in a remote area on the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable NP’s rainforest, a UNESCO world heritage site. Spend the rest of the day relaxing at the lodge with the sounds of the African rainforest and stunning views to the west as the sunsets behind the Virunga volcanoes.

Day 3 - Gorillas in the Mist

Experience Uganda’s greatest natural wonder, an intimate meeting with one of Bwindi Impenetrable NP’s gorilla families. Start early with an orientation from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers on tracking the gorillas, before they guide you through the rainforest. They’ll identify the local plants, birds and wildlife as well the general ecosystem of Bwindi Impenetrable NP for you. The trek length varies, depending on where the gorillas spent the night, ranging thirty minutes to six hours. Once you find these incredible creatures you will spend one hour with them. We think you’ll agree it’s one of the most magical experiences you can have with nature to see this unique family feed, socialise, nurse their young, patrol and display their prowess. After which make the return trek to your lodge to spend a sedate evening unwinding at your cottage, complete with a roaring fire and your personal butler present to attend to you.

Day 4 - Explore the Gorilla Highlands

This morning you have the option of tracking a different gorilla family in the rainforest or you can head down to one of the region's idyllic highland lakes, Lake Mutanda. Here you can spend a day exploring the lake, it’s abundant birdlife, and has views of the now extinct volcanoes Mt. Gahinga ‘the Small Pile of Stones’, Mt. Sabyinyo ‘the Old Man’s Teeth’ and Mt. Muhavura 'the Guide'. You can also take the opportunity to visit the local community around your lodge to learn about the traditions and customs of the region. By dusk return to your lodge for your final evening at the rainforest and unwind under the star-laden skies.

Day 5 - Tree Climbing Lions

This morning you’ll be leaving the gorilla highlands behind and fly over the Impenetrable Forest landing at Kihihi airstrip just outside the boundaries of Queen Elizabeth NP, a 20min flight. You then drive through the savannah plains to your lodge passing plentiful herds of buffalo and Uganda kob. After a leisurely lunch at overlooking the Ntungwe River, seek out tree-climbing lions in huge fig trees amongst the bush on the Ishasha Plains as they lazy away in the shade away from the heat of the day. After viewing these majestic creatures you’ll be taken a safe distance away to the open grassland where you can enjoy some refreshments as your watch the sunset light up the savannah.

Day 6 - Ishasha Plains

Drive out into the African bush to search for hyenas living close to your camp before driving to a secluded spot to enjoying a bush breakfast with views over the grasslands. Then return to camp, where you can unwind by the Ntungwe River to the sounds of the hippos and if you’re lucky elephants coming down to the waters edge. This afternoon drive north through Maramagambo Forest to the heart of Queen Elizabeth NP to your retreat perched on the escarpment overlooking the savannah. While away the rest of the day with views over the grasslands from the infinity pool and unwind with a massage from one of the lodge’s masseurs.

Day 7 - Chimps in a Sunken Rainforest

This morning explore Kyambura Gorge and it’s sunken rainforest. The gorge contains its own rainforest ecosystem in which you will be tracking the chimpanzees. After a briefing from your guides descend along the forest paths into the gorge to search for these illusive creatures. If you manage to track them down you can spend an hour with the chimps before climbing out of the gorge onto the savannah plains. On your return while away the rest of the day then watch the sunset from the comfort of your luxury lodge. If you choose, drive back out onto the savannah for a dusk game drive retiring for the evening.

Day 8 - A Hot Air Balloon Safari

Rise before the sun does to set off for a very special kind of safari. You’ll head into the savannah skies in a hot air balloon to float over the plains as the sun breaks over the horizon. Depending on the prevailing winds you’ll view the Kazinga Channel, Lakes Edward and George with the chance to spot herds of elephants and buffalos with the backdrop of the Rwenzori Mountains. Flights can last anywhere from one to one and half hours until you land for a bush breakfast. Then drive down to Mweya Peninsular to relax by the pool and for a leisurely lunch overlooking the Kazinga Channel with the sound of hippo pods calling and herds of buffalo on the riverbanks. In the mid afternoon board a private boat for a safari along the Kazinga Channel to the edge of Lake Edward. This is a prime way to view a variety of wildlife such as crocodiles and hippo but also give an intimate view to observe elephants, waterbuck, Uganda kob and buffalo coming down to drink. On your return to dry land drive through the African bush to your retreat perched on the escarpment overlooking the savannah.

Day 9 - Crater Lake Fields

This morning either take a sedate start to the day and relax at your lodge or rise early to meet an expert predator tracking team. The rangers from the Uganda Carnivore Program monitor the parks carnivores including lions, leopards and hyenas. With their help you will be able to get up close with the wildlife in seclusion, as they will be able to take you off the beaten track and into the grasslands. You’ll then travel north over the equator following the Rwenzori Mountain chain or ‘Mountains of the Moon’ the reach the Ndali-Kasenda crater lake fields. Your intimate lodge is perched on the rim of an extinct volcano, which since its demise, has filled with water to become the breath taking Lake Nyinambuga. Spend of the rest of the day relaxing at your private cottage. Or if you prefer take a guide ramble through the crater lakes field and even take a dip. After dinner, you’ll sleep to the sounds of the crickets and frogs calling out from the lake below.

Day 10 - Meet the Chimps

Meet with your Uganda Wildlife Authority tracking team early for a briefing on the chimpanzees in the forest. Kibale NP is famous for having the largest concentration of chimps in Africa. Depending on where the chimps are, you should take around four to five hours to complete the tracking. Once you’ve found the group, amongst the dense rainforest, spend an intimate hour with them, watching them play, eat, socialise and display their prowess. Then leave the forest for your own lunch back at your lodge. In the afternoon fly north to your next destination, the savannah plains of Murchison Falls NP, a 1hr flight. Your aircraft will touch down amid a variety of savannah life before you cross the Nile, en route to your secluded lodge perched on the river banks.

Day 11 - The Victoria Nile Delta

Walk down to the lodge’s private dock for a trip on the river Nile. Breakfast will be prepared and served on board as you pass elephants, crocodiles and hippo pods. You can either cruise to the base of Murchison Falls where you can spend the morning sport fishing to try and catch species such as Nile perch and various species of catfish or cruise downstream to the Victoria Nile delta. The delta is particularly known as the habitat of the iconic Shoebill, listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as ‘vulnerable’, which with experienced guides you will try to spot. On returning to the lodge you will have the rest of the day to unwind with a panoramic view up and down stream of the river from your private thatched cottage or cool from the heat of the day in the lodge’s pool.

Day 12 - Nile River Safari

Leave early for a game drive, following in the footsteps of Emin Pasha, Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway and Theodore Roosevelt to discover the savannah plains of Murchison Falls NP. Early morning light will provide excellent photo opportunities and plenty of animal activity before the heat of the day sets in. With an expert ranger seek out elephant, leopard, lion, giraffe and game herds including buffalo, Uganda kob and waterbuck before returning to your lodge for lunch. Then walk down to the dock to embark on a private cruise to Murchison Falls. Meander upstream to the thundering base of the falls, passing giant Nile crocodiles, hippo pods, and a plethora of birdlife inhabiting the riverbanks. On reaching the waterfalls, either return downstream by boat to your lodge or follow the trail up to the top of the falls. Here you can marvel at the splash and rainbows of the Nile crashing through a seven-metre gap in the rock face before being driven to your lodge for dinner.

Day 13 - To the Wilderness

Take a slow morning to enjoy the peace and tranquility of your riverside lodge with breakfast on the terrace. Then cross over the Nile for a final game drive through Murchison Falls NP’s savannah to reach Pakuba airstrip. You will then take to the skies and fly to the wilderness of Kidepo Valley NP, a 1hr 15min flight away. This is Uganda’s best-preserved savannah landscape and the countries last home to cheetahs and ostriches, which can be found here roaming the African bush. On touching down on the airstrip it’s a short drive to reach your lodge, where you’ll find an oasis of luxury in the rugged landscape. As dusk approaches drive out onto the rolling savannah on a short game drive to spot giraffes, lions, elephants and zebras before stopping off at a secluded spot for refreshments as you watch the sunset light up the African bush.

Day 14 - Cheetahs and Ostriches

Rise early to take an extensive game drive out into the northern sector of Kidepo Valley NP. Drive over the seasonally dry Kidepo riverbed to search the savannah scrub for a variety of wildlife including elephants, zebra, giraffes and buffalo but particularly for the cheetahs and flocks of ostriches found here. On your return to the lodge spend the afternoon relaxing and enjoy a dip in the infinity pool with views sprawling across the grasslands. Then after dark head back into the wilds on a nocturnal game drive. This is the perfect way to view the secret lives of the wildlife. Along with your expert ranger seek out a variety of wildlife including hyenas, leopards, serval cats, pangolin and a host of game herds before retiring to your lodge for the evening.

Day 15 - A Walk on the Wild Side

Relax over breakfast from the lodge veranda with views over the waterhole frequented by warthog, zebra and antelope. Enjoy a dip in the infinity pool with views spreading across the grasslands and wildlife to the mountains rising along the horizon. This afternoon you’ll be trekking out onto the savannah plains with a knowledgeable ranger to get an peaceful view of the widlife. When exploring the savannah plains on foot you’ll experince a much more intimate connection with the wildlife with out the confinds of your vehcile. As you walk through the African bush you’ll be seeking species such as giraffe, zebra and oribi as they graze on the rolling grassland of Narus Valley before returning to your lodge for your final evening in Kidepo Valley NP.

Day 16 - An Island Retreat

Drive a short distance to a secluded spot for a bush breakfast so you can relax in the peace and absorb the tranquillity of the savannah. You can then opt for a final game drive through the Narus Valley or return to the lodge. Then take to the skies and fly south to land at Jinja town airstrip, situated at the source of the Nile, a 2hr flight. You’ll be driven down stream to your island lodge nestled amongst tropical rainforest, surrounded by white water rapids of the river Nile. While away the afternoon, relaxing to the sounds of the flowing water and bird songs from your private balcony. Unwind with a massage at the islands private spa and take a dip and plunge into the lodge’s natural swimming pool carved by the river over millennia from pink granite.

Day 17 - White Water Rapids

This morning you’ll be driven up stream to experience the raw power of the river. Make the return journey to your lodge by tackling world-class grade five white water rapids, accompanied by a qualified rafting crew with an excellent safety record. You can complete a full day of rafting on the River Nile or you can be transferred back to your lodge for lunch. If preferred there are a range of other activities on offer such as kayaking, paddle boarding and bungee jumping. In the late afternoon experience the river in a more sedate fashion by taking a sunset cruise following a meandering course across the river as you enjoy some light refreshments as the sunsets.

Day 18 - Horse Riding and Home

Enjoy your last few hours relaxing at your lodge or you can cross onto to the mainland to explore the forests, villages and fields along the river banks by horseback. In the mid afternoon make the return flight back to Kajjansi airfield a 20min flight, where your Savannah Wings representative will be waiting to take you to your accommodation. You’ll be provided with a day room to prepare you for your flight home this evening. Before dinner and your flight, drive down to the lakeshores for a boat cruise around the inlets and bays, with light refreshments served to you as you watch the sunset over Lake Victoria.

Clouds Lodge

Clouds Lodge is an award-winning lodge nestled on the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The lodge has an open plan main building complete with fireplace, high wooden beams but cosily furnished. An eclectic contemporary lodge perched on an escarpment over looking savannah plains. The main lodge building was originally a coffee store and processing plant, surrounded by coffee plantations. This exclusive eco friendly lodge perched on the banks of the River Nile and provides a thatched central lounge, bar and dining area which is raised with wooden decks all around allowing guests to savor the morning sunrise for breakfast, sunset in the evening and 180 degree river views.
