Welcome to the 'Pearl of Africa'

Welcome to Uganda, the ‘Pearl of Africa’! On arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will find your Savannah Wings representative waiting to greet you. They will then drive you to your accommodation for the night a short distance away. Here you’ll be able to freshen up, relax and sleep before you begin your safari tomorrow.

Day 1 - Virunga Volcanoes

After breakfast you’ll be driven 20km north to Kajjansi airstrip, to board your private aircraft to the highlands of Uganda. The scenic flight will take 1hr 30min flying over the shores of Lake Victoria, banana plantations and up into the gorilla highlands. You’ll land at Kisoro town’s airstrip in the shadow of Uganda’s three extinct volcanoes, Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhavura and Mount Sabyinyo. Then be driven up a winding road to your rustic lodge nestled in the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes. Spend the rest of the day relaxing in the peaceful atmosphere of the lodge and unwind with a massage. As evening draws in you’ll be able to keep warm by a roaring log fire to the sounds of frogs and crickets singing outside.

Day 2 - Golden Monkey Troops

Meet your Uganda Wildlife Authority guide for a briefing on the golden monkey tracking. An estimated 3000-4000 individuals live in the Virunga region of which between forty to sixty of them are habituated in Mgahinga Gorilla NP. You will hike through bamboo forest on the extinct volcano’s slopes to seek out these primates. Once you’ve found the monkeys, spend an hour watching these unique primates play, feed and swing from the trees before returning to your camp for lunch. This afternoon you’ll be transferred to your lodge in a remote area on the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable NP, a UNESCO world heritage site. Spend the rest of the day relaxing at your lodge with the sounds of the African rainforest and stunning views to the west, as the sunsets behind the Virunga volcanoes.

Day 3 - Gorillas in the Mist

Experience Uganda’s greatest natural wonder, an intimate meeting with one of Bwindi Impenetrable NP’s gorilla families. Start early with an orientation from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers on tracking the gorillas, before they guide you through the rainforest. They’ll identify the local plants, birds and wildlife as well the general ecosystem of Bwindi Impenetrable NP for you. The trek length varies, depending on where the gorillas spent the night, ranging thirty minutes to six hours. Once you find these incredible creatures you will spend one hour with them. We think you’ll agree it’s one of the most magical experiences you can have with nature to see this unique family feed, socialise, nurse their young, patrol and display their prowess. After which make the return trek to your lodge to spend a sedate evening unwinding at your cottage, complete with a roaring fire and your personal butler present to attend to you.

Day 4 - Volcano Panorama

This morning you have the option of tracking a different gorilla family in the rainforest or you can head down to one of the region's idyllic highland lakes, Lake Mutanda. Here you can spend a day exploring the lake, it’s abundant birdlife, and has views of the now extinct volcanoes Mt. Gahinga ‘the Small Pile of Stones’, Mt. Sabyinyo ‘the Old Man’s Teeth’ and Mt. Muhavura 'the Guide'. You can also take the opportunity to visit the local community around your lodge to learn about the traditions and customs of the region. By dusk return to your lodge for your final evening at the rainforest and unwind under the star-laden skies.

Day 5 - Tree Climbing Lions

This morning you’ll be leaving the gorilla highlands behind and fly over the Impenetrable Forest to reach the rolling savannah of Ishasha Plains, a 20min flight. Touch down just outside the park boundaries at Kihihi airstrip from where you enter the savannah and drive to your lodge passing plentiful herds of buffalo and Uganda kob. After a leisurely lunch at overlooking the Ntungwe River, drive back into the African bush to seek out tree-climbing lions. You will find them in huge fig trees as they lazy away in the shade away from the heat of the day. After viewing these majestic creatures you’ll be taken a safe distance away to the open grassland where you can enjoy some refreshments as your watch the sunset light up the savannah.

Day 6 - Chimps in a Sunken Rainforest

Watch the sun rise with a bush breakfast before driving north through Maramagambo Forest to the heart of Queen Elizabeth NP. This afternoon explore a sunken rainforest in Kyambura Gorge. The gorge contains its own rainforest ecosystem in which you will be tracking the chimpanzees. After a briefing from your guides you’ll descend along the forest paths into the gorge to search for these illusive creatures. If you manage to track them down you can spend an hour with the chimps before to climb out of the gorge onto the savannah plains. It’s a short drive to your lodge where you can while away the rest of the day with views over the savannah from the infinity pool and unwind with a massage from one of the lodge’s masseurs.

Day 7 - Boat Cruise Safari

Enjoy a relaxed morning at your lodge then drive back onto the savannah plains to the Mweya Peninsular. From here take a leisurely lunch overlooking the Kazinga Channel with the sound of hippo pods calling and herds of buffalo on the riverbanks. In the mid afternoon board a private boat for a safari along the Kazinga Channel to the edge of Lake Edward. This is a prime way to view a variety of wildlife such as crocodiles and hippo pods but also give an intimate view to observe elephants, waterbuck, Uganda kob and buffalo coming down to drink and cool off. On your return to dry land drive through the African bush to your retreat perched on the escarpment overlooking the savannah.

Day 8 - Crater Lakes

Rise early to meet an expert predator tracking team. The rangers from the Uganda Carnivore Program monitor the parks carnivores including lions, leopards and hyenas. With their help you will be able to get up close with the wildlife in seclusion, as they will be able to take you off the beaten track and into the grasslands. You’ll then travel north over the equator following the Rwenzori Mountain chain or ‘Mountains of the Moon’ the reach the Ndali-Kasenda crater lake fields. Your intimate lodge is perched on the rim of an extinct volcano, which since its demise, has filled with water to become the breath taking Lake Nyinambuga. Spend of the rest of the day relaxing at your private cottage. Or if you prefer take a guide ramble through the crater lakes field and even take a dip. After dinner, you’ll sleep to the sounds of the crickets and frogs calling out from the lake below.

Day 9 - A Chimps Day

Close to your lodge is Kibale Forest, famous for having the largest concentration of chimps in Africa. A Uganda Wildlife Authority habituation team will give you an orientation on tracking the chimpanzees in the forest. Your aim is to track down the chimps through dense rainforest after they descend from the trees. Once you have found them, you’ll have the day to observe their natural behavior in the wild as they feed, socialise, nurse their young, relax, patrol and display their prowess, before watching them weave their nests and retire for the night into the forest canopy. By dusk you’ll leave the rainforest and head back to your lodge to relax for the evening to the sounds of the crickets and frogs calling out from the lake below.

Day 10 - Heading Home

Spend the morning relaxing at your crater-lake lodge and take a dip in the swimming pool with views across the rolling hills. After lunch make the return flight back to Kajjansi airstrip a 1hr 30min flight, where your Savannah Wings representative will be waiting to take you to your accommodation. You’ll be provided with a day room to prepare you for your flight home this evening. Before dinner and your flight, drive down to the lakeshores for a boat cruise around the inlets and bays, with light refreshments served to you as you watch the sunset over Lake Victoria.

Situated on Ishasha plains by the Ntungwe river, is an idyllic retreat for people who truly enjoy the wilderness. Kyambura Gorge Lodge

An eclectic contemporary lodge perched on an escarpment over looking savannah plains. The main lodge building was originally a coffee store and processing plant, surrounded by coffee plantations. The original structure has been sensitively restored to create a stunning and contemporary living space, balancing the history of the building with a series of distinct luxurious spaces for guests to relax.
