Brief Itinerary

Relax at your secluded lodge perched on the rim of Lake Nyinambuga before trekking through Kibale Forest to spend the day with our close cousins, the chimpanzees. Then discover the savannah of Queen Elizabeth National Park with a classic savannah safari. Experience the sunrise over the African bush as you float in your hot air balloon, explore the river with a private boat safari and seek tree-climbing lions in huge fig trees amongst the bush on the Ishasha Plains.

Welcome to the 'Pearl of Africa'

Welcome to Uganda, the ‘Pearl of Africa’! On arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will find your Savannah Wings representative waiting to greet you. They will then drive you to your accommodation for the night a short distance away. Here you’ll be able to freshen up, relax and sleep before you begin your safari tomorrow.

Day 1: Crater Lakes

After breakfast you’ll be driven 20km north to Kajjansi airstrip, to board your private aircraft and fly to Fort Portal town, a 1hr 30min flight. It’s a short drive into the Ndali-Kasenda crater-lake fields to your intimate lodge perched on the rim of an extinct volcano. The crater has now filled with water to become the breath taking Lake Nyinambuga in a landscape dotted with crater lakes, under the shadow of the Rwenzori mountain range. Spend of the rest of the day relaxing at your private cottage or if you prefer, take a guide to ramble through the crater-lake fields and even take a dip. After dinner, you’ll sleep to the sounds of the crickets and frogs calling out from the lake below.

Day 2 - A Chimps Day

Close to you lodge is Kibale Forest, famous for having the largest concentration of chimps in Africa. A Uganda Wildlife Authority habituation team will give you an orientation on tracking the chimpanzees in the forest. Your aim is to track down the chimps through dense rainforest once they descend from their previous nights nests. Once you have found them, you’ll have the day to observe their natural behavior in the wild as they feed, socialise, nurse their young, relax, patrol and display their prowess, before watching them weave their nests and retire for the night into the forest canopy. By dusk you’ll leave the rainforest and head back to your lodge to relax for the evening to the sounds of the crickets and frogs calling out from the lake below.

Day 3 - Kazinga Channel Safari

A slow start to the day with breakfast overlooking Lake Nyinambuga before driving south to the rolling grasslands of Queen Elizabeth NP. Take a leisurely lunch overlooking the Kazinga Channel with the sound of hippo pods calling and herds of buffalo on the riverbanks. In the mid afternoon board a private boat for a safari along the Kazinga Channel to the edge of Lake Edward. This is a prime way to view a variety of wildlife such as crocodiles and hippo pods but also give an intimate view to observe elephants, waterbuck, Uganda kob and buffalo coming down to drink and cool off. On your return to dry land drive through the African bush to your retreat perched on the escarpment overlooking the savannah.

Day 4 - Hot Air Balloon Safari

Rise before the sun does to set off for a very special kind of safari. You’ll head into the savannah skies in a hot air balloon to float over the plains as the sun breaks over the horizon. Depending on the prevailing winds you’ll view the Kazinga Channel, Lakes Edward and George with the chance to spot herds of elephants and buffalo to the backdrop of the Rwenzori Mountains. Flights can last anywhere from one to one and half hours until you land for a bush breakfast. On your return to the lodge, you can while away the day with views over the gorge and savannah from the infinity pool or unwind with a massage. By late afternoon you’ll have the opportunity to drive back into the African bush for a dusk game drive or you can watch the sunset from the comfort of your lodge.

Day 5 - Predator Tracking

Choose to either spend the morning relaxing at your lodge or meet up with an expert predator tracking team. The rangers from the Uganda Carnivore Program monitor the parks carnivores including lions, leopards and hyenas. With their help you will be able to get up close with the carnivores in seclusion, as they will be able to take you off the beaten track and into the grasslands. After a leisurely lunch at your lodge drive south through Maramagambo Forest to reach the Ishasha Plains. Take a dusk game drive across the plains where there are plentiful herds of Uganda kob, buffalo, elephant and waterbuck. End the day at a secluded spot to enjoy some refreshments as you watch the sunset light up the savannah. Once the sun has set, return to your exclusive camp to spend the evening relaxing to the sounds of the African bush.

Day 6 - Tree Climbing Lions

Drive out into the African bush to search for hyenas living close to your camp before driving to a secluded spot to enjoying a bush breakfast with views across the grasslands. Then return to camp, where you can unwind with view across the Ntungwe River to the sounds of the hippos and if you’re lucky elephants coming down to the waters edge. In the afternoon venture back onto Ishasha Plains to search for their most famous resident, the tree-climbing lions. Seeking them out in the huge fig trees amongst the bush on the Ishasha Plains as they lazy away in the shade away from the heat of the day. Before returning to your exclusive camp to spend a final evening relaxing to the sounds of the African bush.

Day 7 - Returning Home

Spend your last few hours at your exclusive camp by the river before driving through the savannah to Kihihi airstrip. Then make the return flight back to Kajjansi airstrip, a 1hr 30min journey, where your Savannah Wings representative will be waiting to take you to your accommodation. You’ll be provided with a day room to prepare you for your flight home this evening. Before dinner and your flight, drive down to the lakeshores for a boat cruise around the inlets and bays, with light refreshments served to you as you watch the sunset over Lake Victoria.

Ndali Lodge

Ndali Lodge Your intimate lodge is set amongst rolling hills and tea plantations perched on the rim of an extinct volcano, which has filled with water to become the breath taking Lake Nyinambuga. Kyambura Gorge Lodge

An eclectic contemporary lodge perched on an escarpment over looking savannah plains. The main lodge building was originally a coffee store and processing plant, surrounded by coffee plantations. The original structure has been sensitively restored to create a stunning and contemporary living space, balancing the history of the building with a series of distinct luxurious spaces for guests to relax.

Ishasha Wilderness Camp

Situated on Ishasha plains by the Ntungwe river, is an idyllic retreat for people who truly enjoy the wilderness. A central lounge and dining area, under a cool thatched roof, provides a comfortable environment for meals and relaxing during the day. A shaded area beside the river offers al fresco dining and an evening ‘fireplace’ for guests to relax with sundowners and share their day’s experience.
