Welcome to the 'Pearl of Africa'

Welcome to Uganda, the ‘Pearl of Africa’! On arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will find your Savannah Wings representative waiting to greet you. They will then drive you to your accommodation for the night, a short distance away. Here you’ll be able to relax and sleep before you begin your safari tomorrow.

Day 1 - Murchison Falls National Park

After breakfast you’ll be driven 20km north to Kajjansi airstrip, to board your private aircraft and fly to the to the savannah plains of Murchison Falls NP, a 1hr 30min flight. You’ll land inside the park at your lodge on the banks of the River Nile, with a stunning vista of rapids tumbling into the savannah and sound of hippos calling out across the water. At dusk take a game drive with your expert wildlife guides. They’ll help you to seek out a wide range of species including lions, leopards, giraffes, buffalos and elephants. Then return to dinner at your lodge and enjoy the evening under the star-laden skies and the calls of the African savannah.

Day 2 - River Nile Boat Safari

Take a leisurely start to the day to enjoy the lodge facilities including the infinity pool, spa and fully equipped gym. By mid morning drive to the heart of the park stopping at Paraa Lodge for lunch. Close by are the docks from which you’ll be embarking on a private boat cruise to Murchison Falls. Meander upstream to the thundering base of the falls, passing giant Nile crocodiles, hippo pods, and a plethora of birdlife inhabiting the riverbanks. On reaching the waterfalls, either return downstream by boat to your lodge or follow the trail up to the top of the falls. Here you can marvel at the splash and rainbows of the Nile crashing through a seven-metre gap in the rock face before being driven to your lodge for sun downers and dinner.

Day 3 - Savannah Game Driving

The pace of today is in your hands, relax at Bakers Lodge first or leave early for a game drive, following in the footsteps of Emin Pasha, Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway and Theodore Roosevelt to discover the savannah plains of Murchison Falls NP. Early morning light will provide excellent photo opportunities and usually plenty of animal activity before the heat of the day sets in. With an expert ranger seek out elephants, leopards, lions, warthogs, giraffes and large game herds including buffalos, Uganda kobs and waterbucks. You can spend as long as you please exploring the various game circuits until you return to your lodge. Complete the day by cruising on the Nile and enjoy some refreshments as you meander along the river and the sun disappears behind the Blue Mountains of Congo on the horizon.

Day 4 - Victoria Nile Delta

Walk down to the lodge’s private dock for a final trip on the river Nile. Breakfast will be prepared and served on board as you pass elephants, crocodiles and hippo pods. You can either cruise to the base of Murchison Falls where you can spend the morning sport fishing to try and catch species such as Nile perch and various species of catfish or cruise downstream to the Victoria Nile delta. The delta is particularly known as the habitat of the iconic Shoebill, listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as ‘vulnerable’, which with experienced guides you will try to spot. In the afternoon, head to Pakuba Airstrip for a private flight on to Fort Portal town, a 1hr flight. It’s then a short drive into the Ndali-Kasenda crater-lake fields to your intimate lodge perched on the rim of an extinct volcano. The crater has now filled with water to become the breath taking Lake Nyinambuga in a landscape dotted with crater lakes, in the shadow of the Rwenzori Mountain range.

Day 5 - A Chimps Day

Close to your lodge is Kibale Forest, famous for having the largest concentration of chimps in Africa. A Uganda Wildlife Authority habituation team will give you an orientation on tracking the chimpanzees in the forest. Your aim is to track down the chimps through dense rainforest once they descend from their previous nights nests. Once you have found them, you’ll have the day to observe their natural behavior in the wild as they feed, socialise, nurse their young, relax, patrol and display their prowess, before watching them weave their nests and retire for the night into the forest canopy. By dusk you’ll leave the rainforest and head back to your lodge to relax for the evening to the sounds of the crickets and frogs calling out from the lake below.

Day 6 - Kazinga Channel Water Safari

A slow start to the day with breakfast overlooking Lake Nyinambuga before driving south to the rolling grasslands of Queen Elizabeth NP. Take a leisurely lunch overlooking the Kazinga Channel with the sound of hippo pods calling and herds of buffalo on the riverbanks. In the mid afternoon board a private boat for a safari along the Kazinga Channel to the edge of Lake Edward. This is a prime way to view a variety of wildlife such as crocodiles and hippo pods but also give an intimate view to observe elephants, waterbuck, Uganda kob and buffalo coming down to drink and cool off. On your return to dry land drive through the African bush to your retreat perched on the escarpment overlooking the savannah.

Day 7 - Hot Air Balloon Safari

Rise before the sun does to set off for a very special kind of safari. You’ll head into the savannah skies in a hot air balloon to float over the plains as the sun breaks over the horizon. Depending on the prevailing winds you’ll view the Kazinga Channel, Lakes Edward and George with the chance to spot herds of elephants and buffalos with the backdrop of the Rwenzori Mountains. Flights can last anywhere from one to one and half hours until you land for a bush breakfast. Take a game drive back to the lodge, where you can while away the rest of the day with views over the gorge and savannah from the infinity pool or unwind with a massage. By late afternoon you’ll have the opportunity to drive back into the African bush for a dusk game drive or you can watch the sunset from the comfort of your lodge.

Day 8 - Predator Tracking

Choose to either spend the morning relaxing at your lodge or meet up with an expert predator tracking team. The rangers from the Uganda Carnivore Program monitor the parks carnivores including lions, leopards and hyenas. With their help you will be able to get up close with the carnivores in seclusion, as they will be able to take you off the beaten track and into the grasslands. After a leisurely lunch at your lodge drive south through Maramagambo Forest to reach the Ishasha Plains. Take a dusk game drive across the plains where there are plentiful herds of Uganda kob, buffalo, elephant and waterbuck. End the day at a secluded spot to enjoy some refreshments as you watch the sunset light up the savannah. Once the sun has set, return to your exclusive camp to spend the evening relaxing to the sounds of the African bush.

Day 9 - Tree Climbing Lions

Depart early on a morning game drive to view the hyenas who live close by to your camp, before stopping of for a bush breakfast. Continue your game drive to find the most famous resident of Ishasha Plains, the tree-climbing lion. Seek them out in the huge fig trees as they laze away in the shade, away from the heat of the day. You will then take flight from Kihihi airstrip over the mist filled valleys of Bwindi Impenetrable NP to Kisoro town airstrip, a 20min flight. Drive up a winding road to your remote lodge, on the edge of parks rainforest, a UNESCO world heritage site. Spend the remainder of the day relaxing at your lodge with the sounds of the African rainforest and stunning views to the west as the sunsets across the Virunga volcanoes.

Day 10 - Gorillas in the Mist

Experience Uganda’s greatest natural wonder, an intimate meeting with one of Bwindi Impenetrable NP’s gorilla families. Start early with an orientation from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers on tracking the gorillas, before they guide you through the rainforest. They’ll identify the local plants, birds and wildlife as well the general ecosystem of Bwindi Impenetrable NP for you. The trek length varies, depending on where the gorillas spent the night, ranging thirty minutes to six hours. Once you find these incredible creatures you will spend one hour with them. We think you’ll agree it’s one of the most magical experiences you can have with nature to see this unique family feed, socialise, nurse their young, patrol and display their prowess. After which make the return trek to your lodge to spend a sedate evening unwinding at your cottage, complete with a roaring fire and your personal butler present to attend to you.

Day 11 - Volcano Panorama

This morning you have the option of tracking a different gorilla family in the rainforest or you can head down to one of the region's idyllic highland lakes, Lake Mutanda. Here you can spend a day exploring the lake, it’s abundant birdlife, and has views of the now extinct volcanoes Mt. Gahinga ‘the Small Pile of Stones’, Mt. Sabyinyo ‘the Old Man’s Teeth’ and Mt. Muhavura 'the Guide'. You can also take the opportunity to visit the local community around your lodge to learn about the traditions and customs of the region. By dusk return to your lodge for your final evening at the rainforest and unwind under the star-laden skies.

Day 12 - Nocturnal Game Driving

After breakfast savour your last few hours in the rainforest before you transfer back to Kisoro town airstrip to fly out of the gorilla highlands. It’s a 40min flight to Mbarara town airstrip before you drive to your final safari destination, Lake Mburo NP. Your exclusive lodge is perched on a rocky kopje, with spectacular views out over a vast savannah landscape. Take a dip in the infinity pool overlooking the valley below where buffalo, eland, impala, warthogs, bushbuck, giraffe and zebra visit the waterhole. Once the sunsets drive into the darkness on a nocturnal game drive, giving you one of the best chances to find a leopard in Uganda! You’ll also be on the look out for hyena, buffalo and hippopotamus out of the water searching for food before your return to you lodge for the night.

Day 13 - Savannah Horseback Safari

Explore the savannah plains with a horseback safari. By leaving the vehicle behind you’ll be able to experience the peace and tranquility offered by the park. As you trot, canter and gallop you’ll get the chance to be up close with wildlife such as the warthog, topi, impala, duiker, bushbuck, waterbuck and zebra. This afternoon make the return flight back to Kajjansi airstrip a 1hr 30min flight, where your Savannah Wings representative will be waiting to take you to your accommodation. You’ll be provided with a day room to prepare you for your flight home this evening. Before dinner and your flight, drive down to the lakeshores for a boat cruise around the inlets and bays, with light refreshments served to you as you watch the sunset over Lake Victoria.
