Welcome to the 'Land of a Thousand Hills'

Welcome to Rwanda, the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’! On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will find your Savannah Wings representative waiting to greet you. They will then drive you to your accommodation for the night a short distance away. Here you’ll be able to relax and sleep before you begin your safari tomorrow.

Day 1 - Lake Bulera

This morning return to the airport and fly north to reach the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes, a 30min flight. Your premier lodge is perched high up on an escarpment with fantastic panoramic views of Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Muhavura and Mount Gahinga and the twin lakes Bulera and Ruhonda below. In the mid afternoon head down to the idyllic Lake Bulera to take a boat cruise passing fisherman in traditional boats, with views of a volcano panorama. The evening’s entertainment will be a demonstration of traditional music and Intore dance as the sunsets across the volcanoes before you retire to your lodge for the evening.

Day 2 - Meet a Gorilla Family

Experience Rwanda’s greatest natural wonder, an intimate meeting with one of the eight habituated gorilla families of Volcanoes NP. Begin with an orientation from wildlife rangers on tracking the gorillas, before they guide you through the rainforest. They’ll identify the local plants, birds and wildlife as well the general ecosystem of Volcanoes NP for you. The trek length varies, depending on where the gorillas have spent the night and can range from 2 – 5 hours. Once you find these incredible creatures you will spend one hour with them. We think you’ll agree it’s one of the most magical experiences you can have in nature, to see this unique family feed, socialise, nurse their young, patrol and display their prowess. Then make the return trek back down to your lodge to unwind by a roaring log fire and watch the sunset across the Virunga Volcanoes.

Tonight's Accommodation - Virunga Lodge, Volcanoes NP.

Day 3 - Dian Fossey

Hike with a ranger through the beautiful Hagenia - Hypericum forest to reach the now abandoned research camp of Dian Fossey, the renowned gorilla research scientist and conservationist. The trek takes 3 – 4 hours to reach the Karisoke Research Camp, which lies between two volcanoes Mt Visoke and Mt Karisimbi, at around 3000 meters above sea level. Your guide will be able to teach you about Dian Fossey’s work and life en route, as well as give you the history of the national park. Once you have reached the camp explore the site and visit her grave, which can be found here next to several of her favourite gorilla’s burial sites, including ‘Digit’s’ grave. Then make the return trek to your lodge arriving by late afternoon where you can opt for a massage and relax into the evening.

Begin trekking early to seek out the illusive golden monkeys, that can only be found in the Virunga Volcano mountain chain or if preferred track a different gorilla family. Once you have tracked down the troop, spend an hour viewing theses unique primates play, feed and swing from the trees. Then descend back down the mountain slopes for lunch on the lodge terrace with views over Lake Bulera. This afternoon you’ll be leaving the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes to fly 30mins back to Kigali International Airport and your accommodation in the city.
